Frontline Updates - Eco Babies: The Breastfeeding Edition
By Eco Medics • Issue #18 • View online
Hello again,
My Ma has dedicated much of her life to helping and supporting mothers with breastfeeding questions/problems. I grew up listening to thousands of telephone consults and a monthly support meeting at our home. Unfortunately, not enough attention is given to breastfeeding during medical training and as a result of this and time pressures, doctors are not well placed to advise on this important topic. But we should know where to signpost our patients for breastfeeding support. Check out La Leche League GB. The research is overwhelming regarding the benefits to baby, mother, wider family and society, but the benefit of breastfeeding to the environment is also MASSIVE! As the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action puts it: ‘Breastmilk is produced and delivered without pollution, packaging or waste. It is a climate-smart decision.’ Follow the links below for some good reading on the subject.
  1. Infant feeding and the energy transition: A comparison between decarbonising breastmilk substitutes with renewable gas and achieving the global nutrition target for breastfeeding
  2. Climate Change and Infant Nutrition: Estimates of Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Milk Formula Sold in Selected Asia Pacific Countries
  3. The First-Food System: The Importance of Breastfeeding in Global Food Systems Discussions
  4. Climate Change, Food Supply, and Dietary Guidelines
  5. Breastfeeding and Climate Change: Overlapping Vulnerabilities and Integrating Responses
  6. Support for breastfeeding is an environmental imperative
I’m not sure if you feel the same way, but I get a sinking feeling whenever someone mentions mandatory training. It’s just really difficult to be excited about an online moving and handling module. However, we think that a sustainability module could be punchy and engaging, with guaranteed reach to all NHS staff! Fantastic, right? Have your say about MAST by following this link and suggesting that a sustainability module become part of mandatory training.
